Bebington Road Allotments

Bebington Road allotments are in Rock Ferry, Wirral (CH42 4QE). With 260 plots Bebington Road is the largest site in NW England. The site is surrounded by the houses on Bebington Rd, Alexandra Dr, Princes Boulevard, Cavendish Dr and a little bit of Borough Rd. The main access is hidden between 184 and 186 Bebington Rd, a second is equally well hidden between 65 and 67 Alexandra Dr. There's a third on Borough Rd. between 847 Borough Rd. and 1 Kings Way less hidden but used only for pedestrian access.

This aerial photo shows the site as it was in 2006, you can just make out the  Allotment Society's new storage container, in red lead, before it was repainted a more discrete green. Since then many more allotments, and the shop/meeting/kitchen container, have been added. (click to enlarge.)

The site has a heavy soil; on virgin plots it's 25 cm of claggy fertile soil over brick making quality clay, on worked plots it varies with the best being excellent.

The Council purchased the site in 1929, so some plots could have had over 80 years of more or less continuous cultivation, others have laid dormant for many years, but for someone up for a challenge they're available. The site has an active Allotment Society, whose activities include, amongst others: garden tool hire service: running the shop: organising social events and the provision of public liability insurance. The Allotment Society president is Alison McGovern MP.

Take a look at Chris's plot, he's only had plot 432 for 18 months or so, and it was just grass when he took it on.

If you like growing stuff, exercise in the open air and meeting people of a like mind then why not take up a plot. For application details click here
